Genetic testing is a revolutionary method of looking at the patient’s risk of having or developing various psychiatric symptoms and enables a trained psychiatrist to reach a conceptual understanding of what the patient’s underlying condition might be. It also predicts whether or not a patient is going to respond favorably or adversely to certain treatment regimens, whether or not the patient may experience side effects to a certain drug and if the combination of two or more specific medications may be beneficial or hazardous. This enables much more targeted treatment and minimizes guesswork significantly. Genetic testing in Psychiatry is a fast-expanding field and holds even greater promise in the coming years as these diagnostic panels become more extensive.
